Cloud providers are continuously updating their systems to provide, faster, better, and more reliable service to their customers. If you dig through the fine print of most service level agreements (SLAs) from cloud providers, you’ll find that almost all of them offer an average 99% uptime guarantee. Market leaders such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have uptime guarantees that are down to the fraction – 99.9% or more. However, like most things in life, nothing is ever 100% guaranteed when it comes to the cloud.
One recent example of this was the slew of service outages that Google Apps users experienced over the past few weeks. Back on October 9th, Google Apps experienced outages where users were unable to access Google Docs, Slides, and other Apps for Work. Just a few days later on October 13th, Gmail and Google Hangouts both dealt with intermittent service outages. The week following appeared to be free of any issues, but the events did bring up a good point. With a cloud provider, on rare occasions service may not be available.
So what exactly do you do? Do you not move to the cloud? The answer here is frankly, no. On-premise servers also experience service outages from time to time, so it isn’t a matter of if you are using computing power and data storage in house or in the cloud (or both). Rather it is a reflection on the fact that technology will have hiccups from time to time. However, there are options out there to help keep your business running smoothly should a cloud product or service experience an outage.
