Private Access to the Cloud with AWS Direct Connect

Whether it is to store data off-site in the cloud, or to tap into enterprise-level computing power in the cloud, some businesses simply don’t want to move their data off site. Often times, companies will implement private clouds, which essentially virtualize internal servers to create a cloud-like environment in the office, while optimizing existing hardware. However, private clouds don’t have the same scalability options and require in-house staff to manage and maintain.

In order to address privacy , security and performance concerns some companies have regarding moving data to and accessing data from the cloud, Amazon developed AWS Direct Connect which establishes a dedicated network connection between AWS and a company's on-premise infrastructure. According to the AWS website:

Using AWS Direct Connect, you can establish private connectivity between AWS and your datacenter, office, or colocation environment, which in many cases can reduce your network costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and provide a more consistent network experience than Internet-based connections.

How it Works

Using industry standard 802.1q VLANs (Virtual Area Networks) AWS Direct Connect creates a private, direct connection between a company and the AWS cloud. The virtual area network can be segmented into multiple virtual interfaces which allows users to access both public and private cloud resources but with the protection of a private direct connection to the cloud. You get to choose how the data is routed between the cloud and on-premise devices, so you control exactly where your data goes.


  • Reduced Strain on Bandwidth (and Lower Bandwidth Costs)

Company data often consist of thousands or even millions of data points. As such, a company is often dealing with gigabytes or even terabytes of data on a daily basis. This high amount of data going back and forth between the cloud on a standard network connection can clog bandwidth and cause internet traffic to slow. With AWS Direct Connect, data has an unrestricted pathway to and from the cloud without impacting your other network traffic. Plus data transferred through AWS Direct Connect is charged at a lower, Direct Connect data transfer rate as opposed to the Internet data transfer rates. So with Direct Connect you get more bandwidth and a lower price.

  • Privacy

One of the biggest concerns with the cloud is the idea that other individuals might gain access by hacking into a company’s internet connection and disruption data transfer to the cloud. With AWS Direct Connect, companies can establish a private virtual interface between on-premise systems to an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud through Direct Connect. This way companies can transfer their sensitive data to and from the cloud, securely, privately, and at a lower cost than the standard Internet data transfer rate of AWS.
